A solid white-oak dining table, modeled on 18th-century farmhouse tables and designed for the long run.

Most solid-wood tabletops are assembled from many narrow boards and then stained and sprayed to look uniform. Ours is made from only four or five boards, individually selected from white oak measuring seven to twelve inches wide. Long, sound boards at the upper end of that range are uncommon, and using so few allows the grain to travel across the table with unusual breadth and calm. You see more of each tree, with fewer interruptions from one board to the next.

A single-stave apron and gently tapered legs give the table substance without visual heaviness. Its 38-inch depth and generous leg placement also make unusually good use of each length. The 72-inch table seats eight, with three chairs along each side. The 84-inch seats eight with more room between diners. The 96-inch seats ten, with four chairs along each side, while the 108-inch provides the same ten diners with more generous spacing.

Made in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, from Appalachian white oak and finished by hand with a natural, repairable oil finish, it is intended to age through use—not remain untouched by it.

Caperton Furnitureworks is led by West Virginia native Gat Caperton, who took over a longstanding furniture workshop in Berkeley Springs more than 25 years ago. Today, the company continues to make solid wood furniture there using Appalachian hardwoods and a mix of modern production and hands-on craftsmanship.

  • Four or Five Boards, Each a Full Inch Thick

    Each top is assembled from just four or five boards, selected for their width, soundness, and the movement of the grain. Using fewer boards creates a calmer, more expansive surface and allows more of each tree to remain visible.

  • A Natural, Repairable Finish for Everyday Use

    Each table is finished by hand with Odie’s Oil, a food-safe, solvent-free hard-wax oil. Rather than covering the wood beneath a sprayed film, it penetrates the surface and allows most scratches, rings, and blemishes to be repaired locally with light sanding and a fresh application of oil.

At 38 inches deep, with its legs placed toward the corners, the table makes unusually efficient use of each length. The 72- and 84-inch tables seat eight; the 96- and 108-inch tables seat ten. The longer size in each pair provides the same number of diners with more generous spacing.

The Character of Real White Oak

In wide-board white oak, knots and natural markings are not defects to be erased. They are part of the tree’s history, and part of what gives each table its own surface, movement, and presence. We select boards for strength, proportion, and beauty, allowing natural variation to remain where it adds character to the top, without compromising the structure. The result is not a perfectly uniform surface, but a solid oak table with the depth and individuality of real wood.

Things to know

At Roseland, we are proud to finish our furniture by hand, the old-fashioned way. We don’t stain, spray, use lacquers or polys, and we don’t do VOCs. Here are some of the ways this might be different to what you’re used to:

Natural Variation

Because the top is made from only four or five unstained, unusually wide boards, differences in grain, tone, and natural markings will be more visible than they would be in a surface assembled from many narrow strips. These variations are intentional, and your table's color tones will warm slowly to something more uniform.

Seasonal Movement

Solid wood expands and contracts as indoor humidity changes. Small shifts at the board seams, subtle changes across the top, and occasional checking—fine splits that follow the grain—can occur over time, especially as the table adjusts to a new environment. These are natural characteristics of wide-board solid wood and are not necessarily signs of structural failure.

A Surface That Will Age

The natural oil finish leaves the wood feeling like wood. It is made for everyday use, but it is not impervious to standing water, direct heat, or sharp impacts. Use trivets beneath hot cookware, wipe spills promptly, and expect the surface to develop a patina over time. Most localized damage can be easily repaired in minutes with spot sanding and easy application of Odie's Oil.

Chair dimensions vary, but with standard dining chairs:

What size dining table fits in my space?

We recommend leaving at least 36 inches between the edge of the table and any wall or surrounding furniture. Where the space is also a primary walkway, 42 to 48 inches will provide more comfortable circulation.

Remember that the table is 38 inches deep when calculating the total room required.

Can I get a custom size?

Sadly we are not set up for custom sizing.

How are you able to offer this table at this price?

We have kept both the table and our business intentionally simple. It is offered in one wood, one finish, and four standard lengths, allowing the workshop to buy material carefully and repeat the same construction without the cost of extensive customization. It's produced in batches and pushed to finished inventory upon completion.

Roseland also operates with a small team, low overhead, and relatively modest margins. Because we sell directly to customers, there are no wholesale or retail markups added along the way.

The savings come from efficient production, a limited assortment, and a shorter path from the workshop to your home—not from lesser wood or cheaper construction.

How should I clean the table?

For everyday cleaning, wipe the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it promptly. A small amount of mild dish soap diluted in water may be used for more stubborn messes, provided the surface is then wiped clean and dried.

Avoid abrasive pads and general-purpose cleaning sprays, which may dull or damage the natural finish.

To repair heat rings or localized tabletop damage, lightly sand the affected area and apply a fresh coat of Odie’s Oil. The repair should blend easily into the surrounding finish.

Is the finish food-safe?

Yes. The table is finished with Odie’s Oil, a food-safe hard-wax oil, and contains no stain or polyurethane finish.

Do I need to use coasters?

We recommend coasters beneath hot drinks and wet glasses, and trivets beneath hot cookware or serving dishes. Spills should be wiped up promptly rather than left standing on the surface.

How deep is the table?

Every length is 38 inches deep.

Can I assembly the table myself?

Yes, although white-glove delivery includes assembly. If necessary, assembly is straightforward and requires attaching the legs to the frame with four large-diameter bolts.
