The English roll arm is one of the most influential sofa forms in history. At its best, the form is ergonomic art: low arms that let your shoulders drop, a curved back that gives the sofa its posture, a lifted seat that supports the body, and full cushions that soften the sit without swallowing the frame. George Howard, often credited with refining the original form in the 1860s, was early to the idea that comfort starts from the structure and not just the cushion.

Over time, many versions have drifted from the original balance. They became deeper, flatter, bulkier, and more dependent on synthetic softness. The costume remained. The discipline drifted.

Our sofa is an attempt to restore the form from first principles: the posture, the proportion, the sit, and the materials that make the shape feel so perfect.

We start with a solid maple frame, white oak or walnut legs, and eight-way hand-tied construction. We then developed lofty cushioning with 95:5 traceable American feather-down and an organic latex core. We use wool battening to achieve many of the subtle sculpted elements.

For upholstery, we offer an off-white canvas, woven in America or the ability to send our partner your own textile.

A familiar sofa, rebuilt with the reasons it worked in the first place.

Made by Vanguard Furniture in Conover, NC

Family-owned and independent, Vanguard has made furniture in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains since 1969. What began with two artisans has grown into a community of more than 750 craftspeople.

Comfort begins with proportion. The first Rolled Arms departed from the formal sofas of their era because their shape mirrored the body: arms low enough to relax the shoulders, a seat high enough to feel supportive, and lofty, enveloping cushions. Over time, many versions have slouched, becoming deeper, less defined, and less comfortable. We wanted to return to the balance that made the form endure.
  • A STUDY IN PROPORTION

Seen in profile, the proportions that define the sofa become clear. The curved back, lower rolled arms, lifted seat, and generous cushions work together as a single ergonomic composition. The form is both relaxed and proud.

  • LOWER ARMS FOR RELAXED SHOULDERS

The arm is positioned to support the elbow without lifting the shoulder, creating a more relaxed and comfortable sitting posture.

The sofa is built from a simple, mostly natural material stack, with each layer chosen for a specific purpose. A solid maple frame provides the structure, while American-made springs are tied by hand to create a supportive foundation with natural movement. Cushions are generously stuffed with traceable American 95:5 feather down with an organic latex core. The combination provides loft, softness, and just the right amount of spring-back.
  • SOLID MAPLE FRAME

Built entirely from solid maple, without plywood, the frame gives the sofa its underlying strength and shape. It supports the curved back, lower arms, and lifted seat while providing a durable foundation for years of use.

  • HAND-TIED AMERICAN SPRINGS

American-made coil springs are tied by hand in eight directions to create a seat that moves with the body while remaining supportive. The system distributes weight evenly and helps the sofa retain its structure over time.

  • ORGANIC LATEX

GOLS Certified organic latex forms the resilient inner core of the cushions. It compresses comfortably but recovers its shape with gusto. It provides long lasting support without relying on polyurethane.

  • 95:5 TRACEABLE AMERICAN FEATHER & DOWN BLEND

A true 95:5 blend of traceable American feather and down surrounds the cushion cores, adding loft, softness, and movement. It gives the sofa a generous surface feel while the latex beneath provides support and recovery.

American Canvas

Offered first in a single off-white American woven canvas, the fabric was chosen to show the line of the sofa clearly. Woven in America by Valdese Weavers from all-natural American cotton, it is sturdy, useful, and direct — a true foundation material for a foundation piece. Neutral without feeling blank, refined without feeling precious.

Made for Your Material

For decorators, designers, and customers with a specific fabric in mind, the COM program keeps the architecture of the sofa intact: the curved back, lower rolled arms, full cushions, point-finished pleats, eight-way hand-tied construction, and natural material stack. Your textile changes the room language. The sofa underneath remains the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where in the USA is the bed made?

The Pediment Bed is made in Kenon's shop in Bosque County, Texas.

What is the weight limit?

700lbs including your mattress.

Why is the bed more affordable than other domestic equivalents?

Roseland has a very narrow furniture selection that allows us to producer fewer designs at comparatively high volumes.

While there are some savings from bulk ordering materials (we largely work in just cherry and walnut), the biggest savings come from operating a permanent production line for each product vs. the made-to-order challenge of constant switching costs. This lets our manufacturing partners save time and reduces costs of error.

The trade-off of this approach is that we cannot accept custom requests and we have to maintain a limited design catalog.

Do you use only American wood?

Yes, everything is domestic. The platform bed is made with Black Cherry (Prunus Serotina) or Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra) and the slats are made from Poplar, Red Oak, or Maple.

What parts of the bed are not made in America?

While the vast majority of the bed is made in America, the Hafele corner steel brackets are stamped in Germany.

Do you run seasonal promotions?

We have not run any sales in the past and have no current plans to run any in the future. Our business is designed to be as efficient as possible and our prices reflect that. We offer a $75 credit for those who sign up to our newsletter.

Can I get a discount if I order multiple beds?

We offer a 15% discount on three or more beds. Please email us for a single use code.

What is the distance between the slats and how wide is each slat?

Each slat is 2.5" and the spacing is 3" between each slat. This makes the bed compatible with the vast majority of mattresses and their warranties.

How do I take care of the wood finish?

Linseed oil is a traditional finish for early American and European furniture. It protects the wood by penetrating the grain as well as forming a very thin, flexible layer. You can re apply every 5-10 years or as needed. If you ding your bed, you can just sand out the blemish and re-apply linseed oil.

How long does it take to "Dispatch" an order?

Unless otherwise stated, we'll usually dispatch an in-stock order within 3 days of order receipt. Please look to the top of the website for the most recent status updates.

How high would my mattress be from the ground?

The top of the slats are just under 15.25 inches above the ground - they sit inside of the support rails vs. on top of them, allowing us to bring the height slightly lower than you might expect from the design. A typical 10 inch mattress would have you sleeping at 25.25 inches.

How high are the top and bottom of the headboard from the top of the slats?

The top of the headboard is ~24.5 inches above the top of the slats. The bottom of the headboard is ~10.5 inches above the slats.

Is there a video of assembly?

Yes. It's hosted here.

What thickness of mattress is appropriate for the Roseland bed?

We recommend mattresses between 8 inches and 13.5 inches thick. Any thicker and the headboard will feel out of proportion. For context, the mattresses in our shoots are mostly 11.5", with a 10" mattress visible in the more contemporary loft setting and 9.5" on the twin beds.

Why is Black Walnut more expensive than American Cherry?

American Black Walnut is more expensive on a board foot basis and it is also harder to get headboard quality yields. Our black walnut pricing is not a reflection of preference or quality - if you ask us, we actually personally prefer the cherry.

How does the bed ship and how much do the packages weigh?

Your bed ships in 2-packages, with one package substantially larger than the others. The maximum weight package is a little over 100lb for a King size. We offer a white glove delivery upgrade for $195 that includes assembly in the room of your choice.

What is the clearance of the bed for under-bed storage?

Both the standard legs and caster legs give a floor-to-support-rail clearance of just over 13"
