Rolled Arm Sofa
Rolled Arm Sofa

The English roll arm is one of the most influential sofa forms in history. Its lineage traces to Howard & Sons, the Victorian-era London upholstery house known for its 1866 “Elastic Seat” patent, and for the simple insight that true comfort begins inside the structure.
In its original form, the sofa was ergonomic art: low arms that let the shoulders drop, a curved back that gave the sofa its posture, a lifted seat that supported the body, and full, lofted cushions that softened the sit without swallowing the frame.
Over time, many interpretations drifted from that original balance. They became deeper, flatter, bulkier, and, eventually, largely dependent on foam. The costume remained. The discipline drifted.
Our sofa is an attempt to restore the form from first principles: the posture, the proportion, the sit, and the natural materials that make the shape work. We start with a solid maple frame, white oak or walnut legs, eight-way hand-tied springs, a burlap wrap, and 100% wool trim padding. We then layer the seat with generous cushions made from 95:5 traceable American feather/down and 3" organic latex cores.
For upholstery, we offer a cream, 100% cotton twill, woven in America, or the option to send your own textile through our Customer’s Own Material program.
A familiar sofa, rebuilt with the reasons it worked in the first place. Starts shipping in September 2026 on a first-in, first-out basis.

Comfort, Brought Back into Shape
-
A STUDY IN PROPORTION
Seen in profile, the proportions that define the sofa become clear. The curved back, lower rolled arms, lifted seat, and generous cushions work together as a single ergonomic composition. The form is both relaxed and proud.
-
LOWER ARMS FOR RELAXED SHOULDERS
The arm is positioned to support the elbow without lifting the shoulder, creating a more relaxed and comfortable sitting posture.
Natural Materials, Carefully Layered
-
SOLID MAPLE FRAME
Built entirely from solid maple, without plywood, the frame gives the sofa its underlying strength and shape. It supports the curved back, lower arms, and lifted seat while providing a durable foundation for years of use.
-
HAND-TIED AMERICAN SPRINGS
American-made coil springs are tied by hand in eight directions to create a seat that moves with the body while remaining supportive. The system distributes weight evenly and helps the sofa retain its structure over time.
-
ORGANIC LATEX
GOLS-Certified organic latex, from Sri Lankan Pará Rubber Trees, forms the resilient inner core of the cushions. It compresses comfortably but recovers its shape with gusto. It provides long-lasting support without relying on polyurethane.
-
95:5 TRACEABLE AMERICAN FEATHER & DOWN BLEND
A true 95:5 blend of traceable American feather and down surrounds the cushion cores, adding loft, softness, and movement. It gives the sofa a generous surface feel while the latex beneath provides support and recovery.

Made for Your Material
For decorators, designers, and customers with a specific fabric in mind, the Customer's Owned Material (COM) program keeps the architecture of the sofa intact: the curved back, lower rolled arms, full cushions, point-finished pleats, eight-way hand-tied construction, and natural material stack. Your textile changes the room language. The sofa underneath remains the same.

Things to Know
This sofa is built with natural fillings and traditional upholstery methods because we believe this combination makes for a more comfortable, enduring, and repairable piece. These materials and methods also behave a little differently from the highly processed foams and performance fabrics common in contemporary upholstery. Here are a few things to expect:
Feather-and-down cushions are meant to move
The cushions combine a generous 95:5 feather-and-down wrap with a resilient organic latex core. They will relax with use and benefit from occasional fluffing, turning, and rotating. The intention is generous and lived-in, rather than rigid or uniform.
Natural cotton is durable, but not stain-proof
Our standard upholstery is a sturdy, American-woven cotton twill selected for daily use and for the way it reveals the shape of the sofa. It is not coated to behave like a synthetic performance fabric. As with any light-colored natural textile, it will show spills and everyday life more readily than a darker or heavily treated material.
Measure the entire delivery path
The sofa arrives as a full-size upholstered piece through White Glove delivery. Before ordering, please measure the intended room and every doorway, hallway, stair turn, and elevator along the route. If access looks tight, send us your measurements and we will help assess the fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where in the USA is the sofa made?
The sofa is made by Vanguard Furniture in Conover, North Carolina. Vanguard is family-owned and has been making furniture in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains since 1969. Each sofa is bench-made by a team of craftspeople, with individual sewing, upholstery, and inspection sign-offs recorded for the piece.
Where can I see one in person?
To achieve our pricing, Roseland does not have retail partners, dealers, or stores. You can see most of our furniture and try out a sofa at our office in NYC at 255 Canal Street. Please get in touch to make an appointment.
Can I get fabric swatches?
Yes, we will have swatches starting in late August.
What is the main difference versus other rolled arm forms?
Most modern rolled-arm sofas keep the costume but lose the structure: they are often deeper, flatter, bulkier, and more dependent on polyurethane foam for cushioning. This sofa was built around the original ergonomic goals of the form: lower arms, a curved back, a lifted seat, full cushions, a solid wood frame, etcetera. Separately, we also rethought the materials to be more natural and traditional with a 95:5 feather down fill, wool trim padding, and organic GOLS-certified latex.
Why is the sofa more affordable than equivalent sofas using the same materials?
To the extent we could, Roseland has taken our wood business model to upholstery: fewer, focused designs with larger orders for our partners that allow 1) batch production vs. made-to-order production and 2) bulk savings on material inputs.
As with all of our pieces, we've worked on minimizing layers and handling between our customers and manufacturers. All sofas ship direct from the factory they are made in.
What exactly is inside the seat cushions?
The seat cushions use a 3" organic latex core with 95:5 traceable American feather/down blend around it. The latex is specified in the 28–32 ILD range and is organic GOLS-certified latex sourced from the white sap of Pará Rubber Trees in Sri Lanka. The idea is to combine the softness and loft of feather/down with the resilience of latex. We believe it is a far more comfortable cushion than the polyurethane ones prevalent in the market.
What is the frame made from? Where is the wood from? What glue is used?
The frame is made from solid maple and poplar, with no plywood, MDF, OSB, particleboard, cardboard, or fiberboard used to create the frame or soften the contours. The maple is soft maple sourced from the Appalachian region, and the frame glue is Titebond Original Wood Glue, a water-based wood glue.
What are eight-way hand-tied springs?
Eight-way hand tying is a traditional upholstery method where coil springs are secured and tied by hand in multiple directions to create a resilient, even foundation. In this sofa, the springs are made by Leggett & Platt in High Point, North Carolina, clipped to the frame, and genuinely tied by hand in eight directions.
Can the sofa be repaired?
Yes. One advantage of this kind of construction is that it can be repaired by a qualified upholstery or furniture technician. The frame can be repaired using conventional woodworking methods, and individual springs or ties can be serviced. Vanguard also retains patterns and specifications for future repairs or replacement cushions.
How do I take care of the wood finish on the legs?
The legs are solid white oak or walnut, sourced from the Appalachian region and turned in the United States. They are finished with an unscented beeswax furniture polish made with 100% natural ingredients and listed as USDA Certified 100% Biobased. We would recommend brands like Tried and True Original.
Will you offer more fabrics?
Yes, though not immediately. Our research is focused on specific weaves and we will add to the selection as we pass use and fire tests, etc.
The launch fabric is an off-white cotton twill woven in America by Valdese Weavers. It was chosen because it shows the line of the sofa clearly: neutral, sturdy, and direct without feeling precious. The fabric is a single-layer twill, 310.40 g/m², with a 63,000 Wyzenbeek abrasion result and a Grade 4 pilling result.
How did the fabric test?
The fabric is a single-layer twill, 310.40 g/m², with a 63,000 Wyzenbeek abrasion result and Grade 4 pilling result.
Is the off-white fabric practical?
It is a sturdy cotton twill, not a delicate decorative fabric, but it should still be treated like a light-colored natural textile. It will show more life than a dark synthetic performance fabric. For many homes, that is part of the appeal; for heavy spill risk, pets, or young children, COM may be worth considering.
Can I use my own fabric?
Yes. The sofa is available through a COM program for designers and customers who want to use their own textile. The fabric changes the room language, but the underlying architecture remains the same: curved back, low rolled arms, full cushions, point-finished pleats, eight-way hand-tied springs, and the same natural material stack.
How does the sofa ship?
The sofa ships by White Glove delivery through Metropolitan Logistics. It will be brought into your home rather than left at the curb. Because this is a fully built upholstered piece, it does not ship in small boxes like our beds or tables.
What is the difference between the twill fabric and COM?
Our standard fabric is an off-white American cotton twill chosen to show the shape of the sofa clearly. It is neutral, sturdy, and direct. COM, or Customer’s Own Material, allows you to send a fabric of your choice while keeping the same frame, spring construction, cushion system, and overall sofa architecture.
Will the cushions need maintenance?
Yes, a little. The cushions are built for loft and movement, not a fixed, foam-block look. The feather/down wrap gives the sofa its softness, while the organic latex core helps the cushion recover. We recommend occasional fluffing and rotating to keep the cushions even over time.
Why does repairability matter in a sofa?
A sofa is one of the hardest-working pieces in a home, and most failures happen gradually: a loosened joint, a tired cushion, a broken spring tie, worn fabric. This sofa is built with a solid wood frame, hand-tied springs, and replaceable upholstery components, so a qualified upholsterer or furniture technician can service the piece rather than treat it as disposable.
