Inspired by an early 19th-century table from Mount Lebanon, NY, our dining table honors the simple and practical carpentry of the period. It features either rounded or squared ends, a sturdy frame, and an optional drawer. Made in Bradford, VT, from solid American Cherry or Black Walnut, the legs and side skirts are crafted from single pieces of wood.

The hand-rubbed finish uses raw linseed oil on the frame and a beeswax–natural oil blend on the tabletop, making it both food-safe and long-lasting. The minimal, unstained, un-lacquered finish allows for easy repair with simple hand sanding and occasional applications of linseed oil.

Cherry tables will darken with age as the tannins oxidize, while Walnut tables will lighten slightly.

Tables will begin shipping in early to mid-December, on a first-order, first-out basis.

Tables are made in small batches in Copeland’s facility with lumber sustainably sourced from eastern forests.

simple and solid

This table starts life stark and almost sharp in silhouette. But as you dine on it, the edges will get softer, the finish will enrich, and the marks of use will add character. — Luke Sherwin, Owner
  • food safe beeswax and essential oil blend

We use Odie's Dark Oil, a natural, solvent-free, zero VOC blend of essential oils and beeswax on the table top. It provides a low sheen, slightly more protective finish than linseed oil alone.

  • Hand-selected boards

Each table's top is made with a careful selection of boards, balancing wood tones and grain. The result is a consistent, stain-free top that will only improve with age and use.

  • Soft Close drawer with dove tail joints

We use under-mount, soft-close glides for the drawer. The drawer frame is solid wood with veneered domestic plywood for the drawer bottom.

  • Made to Last

The table is made with endurance in mind: each leg and stretcher is cut from a single stave of hardwood.

Care

Minimal care is needed but hand-rubbing linseed oil every few years will only be to the Table’s benefit.

Things to Know

At Roseland, we’re proud our tables are finished by hand, the old-fashioned way. We use natural, solvent-free, petroleum-free oils — we don’t stain, spray, use lacquers or polys, and we don’t do VOCs. Here are a few ways this might differ from what you’re used to:

Natural color shifts

Cherry wood starts light and darkens significantly in the first three months. From months 3 to 12, the darkening slows, reaching a deep, rich tone with red undertones. Walnut starts as a deep brown and gradually lightens over time. In the first three months walnut’s tone becomes warmer and lighter. From months 3 to 6, the change slows as it settles into a medium brown with golden or amber tones. In our opinion, the mature tones of both woods are preferable to the initial ones.

Oil finishes mean a breathable, naturally coarser finish

Many furniture companies seal their wood with an additive layer that closes the grain and can be sanded to a near mirror finish - the lacquer or polyurethane is being sanded rather than the wood itself. With a breathable oil finish, the wood’s grain is exposed, which is naturally coarser than sanded polyurethane or lacquers.

Solid wood and humidity can mean seasonal movement

In winter, low humidity from furnace heat can lower the humidity content in the wood and dry it somewhat (dry desert environments can do this year round!). If you encounter creaks, the first thing to do is to lubricate the wood-on-wood joints of the table with a beeswax furniture paste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can sit at my table?

Each table accommodates a comfortable range:

  • 72" tables seat 4 comfortably and up to 6 for more intimate gatherings.
  • 84" tables seat 6 comfortably and up to 8 for more intimate gatherings.
  • 96" tables seat 8 comfortably and up to 10 for more intimate gatherings.

What size table fits in my space?

We recommend leaving at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides of the table to allow room for chairs and comfortable movement.

What are the dimensions of the drawer? / How much can each drawer hold?

The drawer dimensions vary based on the size of the table:

  • 72" length: 16.750" long, 15" wide and 2.250" deep
  • 84" length: 28.750" long, 15" wide and 2.250" deep
  • 96" length: 28.750" long, 15" wide and 2.250" deep

Each drawer can hold up to 85 lbs of weight.

How heavy is the table? Are the legs removable for moving?

The table weighs between 150 and 200 pounds, depending on it's size. The legs detach easily, allowing for simple transport or storage.

How easy is assembly?

Assembly is simple, just attach the legs to the main frame using the included bolts and hex key. The whole process including flipping the table takes around 5 minutes.

We highly recommend having an additional person help flip the table.

How resistant is the surface to scratches, stains, and heat? Can the finish be refinished or restored?

The table is durable but not impervious - It can show marks from heavy use, heat, or liquids. If needed, light sanding followed by a fresh coat of natural linseed oil will restore the surface.

How do I care for the Dining Table? Can I use an all-purpose cleaner?

Keep the surface clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. For deeper care, refresh the surface occasionally with a light coat of food-safe linseed oil or beeswax polish to maintain its luster and protection.

Avoid standard all-purpose cleaners, as they can strip or dull the natural finish. If a commercial cleaner feels necessary, choose one specifically labeled safe for unsealed wood furniture.

Do I need to use coasters or placemats?

Yes, we recommend using coasters and placemats to minimize the risk of scratches, stains, and heat marks.

Where in the USA is the table made?

The table is made in Bradford, Vermont by Copeland and Sons.

Why is the table more affordable than other domestic equivalents? What's the trade-off?

Roseland has a very narrow furniture selection that allows us to producer fewer designs at comparatively high volumes.

While there are some savings from bulk ordering materials (we largely work in just cherry and walnut), the biggest savings come from operating a permanent production line for each product vs. the made-to-order challenge of constant switching costs. This lets our manufacturing partners save time and reduces costs of error.

The trade-off of this approach is that we cannot accept custom requests and we have to maintain a limited design catalog.

Do you use only American wood?

Yes, everything is domestic. The table is made with Black Cherry (Prunus Serotina) or Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra).

Can I customize the dining table?

We currently don’t offer customization for the dining table. We make our pieces with Copeland for standard sizes, allowing us to keep craftsmanship high and prices fair. By producing in consistent dimensions, we’re able to conserve materials and reduce waste.
