Inspired by early American prep tables, our redesigned kitchen island is now made in solid cherry with soft-close drawers. The table stands sturdy on its feet with single stave cherry legs in either a square tapered form or a round taper with casters. Configurable in two depths and two lengths, with two or four drawers, the table now offers more versatility for different uses and spaces. Orders placed today will start shipping in April.

Designed and made by Kenon Perry in Bosque County, TX

Islands are made in Kenon's six-person shop in the town of Morgan. Each piece is carefully inspected for grain matching and allowed to cure before being packed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you change the design?

While our original design was much loved, we wanted to create a stiffer structure with better leg joints for heavier long-term use. In redesigning for this goal, we also updated the design to include soft-close drawers and additional sizes.

Do you use only American wood?

Yes, everything is domestic. The kitchen prep island is made almost entirely with American Cherry - the only exception are the drawer bottoms which use cherry-faced domestic plywood.

Why did we switch from Maple to Cherry?

Two reasons: 1) We prefer its warmer, richer aesthetic and natural aging process, which has a beautiful character. 2) Since cherry is the primary wood that Kenon works with, it allows us to be more efficient with materials, minimize waste, and ensure a consistent, high-quality finish that matches our other products.

How do I take care of the wood finish?

The island is finished in pure Tung Oil, a zero VOC, natural finish derived from the Tung Tree. Tung oil is more resilient and water resistant than linseed oil. It is also an FDA-approved, food-safe finish. Like any frequently used butcher block prep surface, the Kitchen Island requires regular lubrication.

At Roseland, we prefer using this natural finish to mineral oils, however you can still use mineral oil to lubricate the top prep surface.

For cleaning, warm water and a little bit of soap is appropriate, however it is equally important to dry the surface. In general, if you can keep the surface dry, the less you will need to apply Tung or mineral oil.

Is the table food grade safe?

Yes, pure Tung oil is food safe!

How can I clean the prep surface itself?

Due to the table’s natural finish, we recommend using light amounts of soap and water combined with paper towels or wash cloths to clean off the table after food use. We normally do not recommend using bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) as it has the possibility of leaving white spots on your table top. If you have to use bleach, apply it lightly to a cloth and dab at any spots.

Does the height of the table change with casters?

No, the table doesn’t change in height as the caster legs are specially made to be the same length, even with the wheel attached.

Can the table be assembled by myself?

While assembly is not complex, the kitchen work table arrives in three boxes and requires flipping the table during assembly. We recommend having an additional person there to help flip the table.

Do the casters fully lock / how easy is it to move the prep island?

The casters do fully lock, which prevents the table from any form of rolling. Once the caster wheels are unlocked, it's quite easy to move the table from location to location. It should be notated, however, that the caster frames remain in a fixed position and don't rotate, so any turns should also involve a lift of 2 of the wheels.

Can the kitchen prep island be used for other areas of my home?

Yes! While we designed it to be a center piece in your kitchen, the table can fulfill multiple roles and be used anywhere that requires a work table. The height is countertop height.

How much weight can the table / each drawer support?

The table as a whole can support up to 250 lbs of direct weight on top of the butcher block, while the drawer glides have a 75lb maximum weight.

Can you list the changes you made to the Kitchen Prep Island

We changed the wood type from maple to cherry, made the structure stiffer with additional under belly stretchers, and added soft-close glide drawers. For the standard table, we have transitioned to a rectangular two sided tapered leg that embraces a more traditional silhouette. For the caster version, the legs will be turned as they were with the original design. We now finish the island in pure Tung oil, a zero VOC alternative to mineral oil.
