Matelassé Blanket
Matelassé Blanket
Inspired by an early 19th century blanket, likely from Virginia, our historic Matelassé blanket is woven in Monmouth, Maine in the last American mill to produce the fabric.
Matelassé means “padded” in French and refers to the fabric’s sense of luxurious depth while bypassing the use of padding or fillers. Weighing up to eight pounds when complete, the production of each blanket involves at least ten people, including nearly thirty minutes on a card-controlled jacquard loom.
The design features a cornucopia found on the 1830-1850 blanket and symbolizes the bounty of America. The 100% cotton blanket is made from a combination of heavier 3.75/2 American yarn and then super fine 20/2 and 30/2 yarns from Tamil Nadu in southern India.

Woven in Maine
-
A near-lost art
Matelassé is a unique weaving technique that is both labor-intensive and material consuming. At this time, Maine Heritage Weavers is the only American manufacturer dedicated to preserving the technique in the USA.
-
Luxurious, Without the padding
The honest luxury of Matelassé is that it achieves its rich texture with more cotton and loom time rather than the use of fillers or quilting.
-
A SYMBOL OF PLENTY
The cornucopia design, inspired by an 1830-50 blanket from Virginia, is intertwined with grapevines, symbolizing the abundance and fertility of the Americas.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should I wash/dry the Matelassé Blanket?
We recommend a gentle wash cycle with warm water. Do not use any bleach or detergent with bleach additives. Tumble dry with low heat.
Does the Heirloom Warranty apply to the blanket?
Unfortunately it does not. It is unrealistic for Maine Heritage Weavers to repair individual blankets. Matelassé is inherently strong and durable and should last a lifetime as long as it is taken care of.
Are there any materials not sourced in America?
50% of the yarn used for the Matelassé Blanket is sourced from Tamil Nadu, India, where the finer yarn in the blanket (20/2 and 30/2 yarns) is more readily available. The heavier half is from the delta region of the USA and is USDA certified.
What does Oeko-Tex certified mean?
Oeko-Tex is an internationally recognized testing standard that tests for 1000 substances deemed harmful to humans. Certification requires an item passing this safety test. In the Matelassé, the imported 50% of the cotton undergoes this test. The 50% domestic cotton from the delta region complies instead with USDA regulations.
How does exposure to sunlight or prolonged use affect the natural fiber’s longevity?
Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause yellowing to the white color and fading to natural cotton or dyed cotton.
What's the process for removing stains?
Tips:
- Remove the stain as soon as possible.
- Heat sets stains, making them harder to remove. Avoid running your blanket through the dryer until the stain has been removed.
Technique:
- Pour small amount of bleach alternative (we recommend Tide plus bleach alternative) over the affected area.
- Rinse with cold water while rubbing.
- Repeat if needed.
- Launder normally (see above).
How much shrinkage can I expect if I wash my bedspread or coverlet?
Our products are preshrunk. You can expect no more than 2% shrinkage, if any.
