The Rolled Arm Chair shares its lineage with our Rolled Arm Sofa, drawing on the 19th-century English upholstery tradition of Howard & Sons. Both begin with the same conviction: the original Victorian pieces achieved a balance of proportion, structure, and natural materials that many contemporary interpretations have lost. Recovering their comfort means returning to both the form and the materials that made it work.

In the chair, low rolled arms let the shoulders relax, a gentle convex curve provides lumbar support, and a full seat cushion adds softness without obscuring the shape beneath. The frame narrows slightly toward the rear, gently cradling the hips.

Made by Vanguard Furniture in Conover, North Carolina, it combines a solid hardwood frame, white oak or walnut legs, eight-way hand-tied springs, burlap, and 100% wool trim padding. The seat cushion pairs a 3-inch organic latex core with a generous wrap of 95:5 traceable American feather and down: resilience underneath, loft and softness at the surface.

Comfort, Brought Back into Shape

Comfort begins with proportion. The first Rolled Arms departed from the formal seating of their era because their shape mirrored the body: arms low enough to relax the shoulders, a seat high enough to feel supportive, and lofty, enveloping cushions. Over time, many versions have slouched, becoming deeper, less defined, and less comfortable. We wanted to return to the balance that made the form endure.

    Seen in profile, the proportions that define the chair become clear. The curved back, lower rolled arms, lifted seat, and generous cushions work together as a single ergonomic composition. The form is both relaxed and proud.

Beneath the Upholstery

The finished upholstery follows a form that is already established underneath. The curved back and rolled arms are shaped into the solid wood frame, then covered in burlap to create the foundation for the upholstery layers that follow. Even before the cushions and fabric are added, the proportions of the finished piece are already visible.

The chair is built from a simple, mostly natural material stack, with each layer chosen for a specific purpose. A solid maple and poplar frame provides the structure, while American-made springs are tied by hand to create a supportive foundation with natural movement. Cushions are generously stuffed with traceable American 95:5 feather down with an organic latex core. The combination provides loft, softness, and just the right amount of spring-back.

    North Carolina-made coil springs are tied by hand in eight directions to create a seat that moves with the body while remaining supportive. The system distributes weight evenly and helps the chair retain its structure over time.

    GOLS-Certified organic latex, from Sri Lankan Pará Rubber Trees, forms the resilient inner core of the seat cushion. It compresses comfortably but recovers its shape with gusto. It provides long-lasting support without relying on polyurethane.

    A true 95:5 blend of traceable American feather and down surrounds the cushion core, adding loft, softness, and movement. It gives the chair a generous surface feel while the latex beneath provides support and recovery.

Offered first in a cream, American-woven 100% cotton twill, the fabric was chosen to show the line of the chair clearly. Woven in America by Valdese Weavers, it is sturdy, useful, and direct — a true foundation material for a foundation piece. The fabric is Greenguard Gold Certified and BCI Certified through the Better Cotton Initiative.

This chair is built with natural fillings and traditional upholstery methods because we believe this combination makes for a more comfortable, enduring, and repairable piece. These materials and methods also behave a little differently from the highly processed foams and performance fabrics common in contemporary upholstery. Here are a few things to expect:

Feather-and-down cushions are meant to move

The cushions combine a generous 95:5 feather-and-down wrap with a resilient organic latex core. They will relax with use and benefit from occasional fluffing, turning, and rotating. The intention is generous and lived-in, rather than rigid or uniform.

Natural cotton is durable, but not stain-proof

Our standard upholstery is a sturdy, American-woven cotton twill selected for daily use and for the way it reveals the shape of the chair. It is not coated to behave like a synthetic performance fabric. As with any light-colored natural textile, it will show spills and everyday life more readily than a darker or heavily treated material.

Measure the entire delivery path

The chair arrives as a full-size upholstered piece through White Glove delivery. Before ordering, please measure the intended room and every doorway, hallway, stair turn, and elevator along the route. If access looks tight, send us your measurements and we will help assess the fit.

Where in the USA is the chair made?

The chair is made by Vanguard Furniture in Conover, North Carolina. Vanguard is family-owned and has been making furniture in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains since 1969. Each sofa is bench-made by a team of craftspeople, with individual sewing, upholstery, and inspection sign-offs recorded for the piece.

Where can I see one in person?

Our direct business model allows us to keep prices where they are, but it also means that we do not work with retailers or dealers. Our chair, sofa and most of our pieces can be seen by appointment at our small office on Canal Street. Schedule an appointment here.

Can I get fabric swatches?

Yes, we will have swatches starting in late August.

What is the main difference versus other rolled arm forms?

Most modern rolled-arm chairs and sofas keep the costume but lose the structure: they are often deeper, flatter, bulkier, and more dependent on polyurethane foam for cushioning. This chair was built around the original ergonomic goals of the form: lower arms, a curved back, a lifted seat, full cushions, a solid wood frame, etcetera. Separately, we also rethought the materials to be more natural and traditional with a 95:5 feather down fill, wool trim padding, and organic GOLS-certified latex.

Why is the sofa more affordable than equivalent sofas using the same materials?

To the extent we could, Roseland has taken our wood business model to upholstery: fewer, focused designs with larger orders for our partners that allow 1) batch production vs. made-to-order production and 2) bulk savings on material inputs.

As with all of our pieces, we've worked on minimizing layers and handling between our customers and manufacturers. All chairs ship direct from the factory they are made in.

What exactly is inside the seat cushions?

The seat cushions use a 3" organic latex core with 95:5 traceable American feather/down blend around it. The latex is specified in the 28–32 ILD range and is organic GOLS-certified latex sourced from the white sap of Pará Rubber Trees in Sri Lanka. The idea is to combine the softness and loft of feather/down with the resilience of latex. We believe it is a far more comfortable cushion than the polyurethane ones prevalent in the market.

What is the frame made from? Where is the wood from? What glue is used?

The frame is made from solid maple and poplar, with no plywood, MDF, OSB, particleboard, cardboard, or fiberboard used to create the frame or soften the contours. The maple is soft maple sourced from the Appalachian region, and the frame glue is Titebond Original Wood Glue, a water-based wood glue.

What are eight-way hand-tied springs?

Eight-way hand tying is a traditional upholstery method where coil springs are secured and tied by hand in multiple directions to create a resilient, even foundation. In this sofa, the springs are made by Leggett & Platt in High Point, North Carolina, clipped to the frame, and genuinely tied by hand in eight directions.

Can the chair be repaired?

Yes. One advantage of this kind of construction is that it can be repaired by a qualified upholstery or furniture technician. The frame can be repaired using conventional woodworking methods, and individual springs or ties can be serviced. Vanguard also retains patterns and specifications for future repairs or replacement cushions.

How do I take care of the wood finish on the legs?

The legs are solid white oak or walnut, sourced from the Appalachian region and turned in the United States. They are finished with an unscented beeswax furniture polish made with 100% natural ingredients and listed as USDA Certified 100% Biobased. We would recommend brands like Tried and True Original.

Will you offer more fabrics?

Yes, though not immediately. Our research is focused on specific weaves and we will add to the selection as we pass use and fire tests, etc.

Can I use my own fabric?

Yes. The chair and sofa are available through a COM program for designers and customers who want to use their own textile. How does the sofa ship?
