Our oil begins as flaxseed oil, pressed from raw flax grown in the Dakotas. The oil is then refined through settling, water-washing, and fine filtration. This process removes excess plant solids and mucilage, improving clarity and curing consistency. The oil is naturally solvent-free and classified as zero-VOC.

Linseed oil has been used for centuries as a traditional finish for wood, protecting tools, furniture, and built surfaces while allowing the material to remain breathable and repairable. It is well suited to solid hardwoods, where it enhances grain, deepens tone, and can be renewed over time.

Ours is not boiled and contains no added driers. It cures slowly, typically becoming dry to the touch in about three days and continuing to harden over weeks or months.

Like other drying oils, it oxidizes and cures through exposure to air, gradually polymerizing within the wood fibers. The result is a low-sheen surface that develops with use without forming a plastic film.

Each bottle contains 16 fluid ounces.

Made by Heron Linseed Oil Paint in Sonoma County, California

Founded by Travis Joslyn, Heron makes linseed oil paint from oil pressed from U.S.-grown flaxseed and purified in small batches. It penetrates wood—protecting it from within, not forming a film—so it won’t peel or crack. Free of solvents, plastics, and VOCs.

Oil versus Varnish

Linseed oil penetrates into the wood and cures within the fibers, leaving a low-sheen surface that can be renewed over time. In its pure form, it introduces no added solvents or VOCs. Varnishes and polyurethanes instead form a hardened layer at the surface, building a film from resins typically carried in solvents.

We prefer oil because it works with the wood, not over it, preserving the material’s texture, aging gradually, and allowing it to be renewed rather than replaced.

Linseed oil felt classic—something you could use without thinners or a respirator.” — Travis Joslyn, Heron Linseed Oil Paint
  • Cleaner Oil. Better Cure.

Purification removes excess plant solids and mucilage from raw flaxseed oil, improving clarity and curing consistency. The result is a cleaner-penetrating oil that dries more evenly, with less surface tack and more predictable long-term performance.

  • Made to Be Maintained

This is a finish designed to wear in, not fail. It can be sanded, re-oiled, and renewed over time—no stripping, no refinishing, no starting over.

  • American Flax

Made from flax grown in the United States and pressed into oil for finishing. Domestic sourcing allows for better consistency in both the raw material and the final product.

  • Zero VOCs

This is 100% flaxseed oil—no solvents, no metallic driers, no synthetic additives. In its pure form, linseed oil contains no added VOCs and cures through exposure to air rather than evaporation.

  • Free Shipping

Carefully packed and shipped free via UPS Ground. On oil, we accept unused returns only.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply the oil?

We recommend adding the oil on a cloth or paper towel and spreading it liberally throughout the wooden surface.

What is the difference between your raw linseed oil and others on the market?

The main differentiator is how Heron filters and purifies the oil in small batches, allowing for a more even finish and more consistent penetration into the wood fibers. Industrial production of linseed oil often involves chemical degumming and high-temp processing.

How often should I apply the oil to my wooden furniture?

We suggest applying the oil every few years to support the natural aging process of the wood. If you live in a particularly dry climate, the oil can be applied more frequently than that.

How long will this bottle last?

The 16oz bottle should last you for a long time as natural wood doesn’t require frequent reapplication of the oil. 100 square feet of coverage per ounce is possible on most hardwoods.

Is it compatible with Roseland’s wooden products?

Yes! Additionally, Heron’s Purified Linseed Oil is used during the manufacturing process of many of our products, including The Roseland Bed, The Pediment Bed, The Nightstand, and The Candle Stand.

Will it smell?

There will be a natural scent following the application of the oil. The smell typically dissipates within 3-4 weeks. Most would describe it as "pleasant and earthy."

How and where should I store the oil?

We recommend storing the oil in a cool, dark place to preserve its longevity.
