Modeled on a 1785-1800 chair in George and Martha Washington's home, our Windsor chair adopts the American evolution of the British classic: a more planted stance, a simple bow-back and small guide “fillets” in the turnings.

Made in Columbiana, Ohio, boards are carefully selected to achieve even tones without the crutch of staining. The chair features wedged-through-tenons on the bow, classic saddle scoop and handholds, and is made from solid cherry or walnut sourced locally in Ohio and Appalachia. It is finished with hand-rubbed raw linseed oil giving the surface a lustrous, repairable, and Zero-VOC finish.

We offer discounts on sets as the efficiency of shipping multiple chairs is substantial.

Made by Green Gables in Columbiana, Ohio

Chairs are made in small batches in Green Gables’ dedicated chair workshop.

a chair of history

The Windsor Chair may be from the 18th century but its one of those shapes that somehow never ages < –Luke Sherwin, owner
  • Even-Toned, Unstained, American Hardwood

Crafted in solid Cherry or Walnut with no sapwood in the seat, each chair has its boards selected for a deep, uniform tone that deepens with time.

  • Hand-Rubbed Linseed oil Finish

We use a zero-VOC, hand-rubbed linseed oil that enhances the grain’s natural depth while keeping the surface safe and easily repairable for years to come.

  • In Columbiana, Ohio, chairmaker Keith inspects each piece by hand — a quiet continuation of a centuries-old American woodworking tradition.

  • Traditional joinery techniques, like these wedged tenons, have held Windsor chairs together for centuries — strong, simple, and meant to last.

Things to Know

At Roseland, we are proud to finish our chairs by hand, the old fashioned way. We select wood for its natural character - we don’t stain, spray, use lacquers or polys, and we don’t do VOCs. Here are some of the ways this might be different to what you’re used to:

Grain Variation

We select and combine staves of wood for a stain-free construction. While our partners do their best to combine staves in a pleasing way, you can expect more natural variation in grains and tones than you might in a stained piece of furniture.

Natural color shifts

Cherry wood starts light and darkens significantly in the first three months. From months 3 to 12, the darkening slows, reaching a deep, rich tone with red undertones. Walnut starts as a deep brown and gradually lightens over time. In the first three months walnut’s tone becomes warmer and lighter. From months 3 to 6, the change slows as it settles into a medium brown with golden or amber tones. In our opinion, the mature tones of both woods are preferable to the initial ones.

Linseed oil means a breathable, naturally coarser finish

Many furniture companies seal their wood with an additive layer that closes the grain and can be sanded to a near mirror finish - the lacquer or polyurethane is being sanded rather than the wood itself. With a breathable oil finish, the wood’s grain is exposed, which is naturally coarser than sanded polyurethane or lacquers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this chair and other Windsor Chairs online.

While there are many Windsor Chairs made all over the world - including many with a "walnut" or "cherry" stain applied to an imported wood - very few are made of solid walnut or cherry and unstained.

This Windsor also employs historic techniques like through-tenon joinery on the bowback and traditional fillets on the spindles.

How do I take care of the chair?

Linseed oil is a minimal but easily repairable finish. Do not use strong chemicals to clean the chair. Keep the chair dry and re-apply linseed oil as needed.

How much weight can the chair support?

We rate the Windsor Chair for 350lbs.

How do I return the chairs if they aren't a fit?

It is important that you keep your boxes so that we can ship the chairs. Roseland is a small business and doesn't have its own trucks.

For larger orders, we'll pick up the chairs with a logistics provider. For individual chairs we'll ship via Fedex.

Do I need felt feet?

Felt feet both protect your floor and ensure that the chair sits more evenly on uneven floors.

What’s the process for removing stains / repair of the seat?

Usually the easiest solution will be to lightly sand the spot with 160 grit or greater, then apply raw linseed oil to the sanded area.

Please note, while the initial wood tone may be lighter, the tones will even out over time as the affected area is exposed to the oil and light.
