Crafted from real American Chestnut reclaimed from barn frames in Ohio, this sawbuck dining table honors the functionally extinct tree once called the "cradle-to-grave tree" of America. With its rich golden tones and expressive open grain, it has a uniquely warm character that harks back to the natural abundance of early America.

The table is made in Bradford, Illinois, by Green Gables Furniture, using 5" × 5" stock cut from old posts and beams, from the 19th century and early 20th century. Each board bears the subtle marks of its history—rich color variation, tight grain, and old nail holes. The tabletop is over 1.5" thick, with boards four inches and wider.

The classic sawbuck base, with its cross-braced trestle form, was especially popular among German immigrants in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. One benefit of the design is that it allows chairs to fit comfortably along the entire length of the table. With two chairs placed intimately across the 38" width, the 84" and 96" tables can seat up to 10 and 12 people, respectively.

We can accommodate customization requests for both the width and length of the table. Tables will begin shipping in early to mid-December on a first-order, first-out basis.

A Reminder of our past

"Something about seeing real American Chestnut up close is as heartbreaking as it is wonderful. You're reminded of a time when this tree was so abundant that it could almost be taken for granted." -- Luke Sherwin, owner
  • Reclaimed character

Chestnut’s rare grain glows with golden, shifting tones and gentle imperfections. It's a physical reminder of the "Bread tree" or "cradle-to-grave tree" that supported and fed indigenous Americans and old-world transplants alike.

  • PRACTICAL DESIGN

The sturdy sawbuck design was especially popular with the Pennsylvania Dutch in the early 19th century. The table features historic through-tenon joinery and whole boards for all of its structural parts.

  • feast ready

The sawbuck design allows for chairs to sit unobstructed by the legs throughout the length of the table. At 38" wide, you can also fit two chairs at each end in an intimate configuration.

  • 1.5 inch thick boards

The proportions come from early American forms—simple, functional, well-balanced. It sits sturdy and quiet, made to live comfortably in any room.

Things to Know

This table uses reclaimed American Chestnut that is characterful and finished with a hand-rubbed Odie's Dark Oil finish. Many of the boards are hundreds of years old. Here are some things that you should expect.

Characterful with imperfections

The chestnut boards used in the table are cut from reclaimed barn posts in Ohio. Nail holes, checking, mineral deposits and some signs of insect activity are part of the appeal of the table.

Odie’s Dark Oil Finish

We finish the table in hand-rubbed Odie's Dark Oil - a solvent-free, food-safe, non-toxic, oil and wax blend that includes linseed oils and tung oils. Odie's oil is a penetrating finish that leaves the wood grain exposed - Because wood grain is coarser than sanded polyurethanes or lacquers, it is likely to be a less smooth surface than you may be used to.

Minimalist but repairable finish

While Odie's oil and other penetrating finishes don't provide as much protection as solvent-based finishes, they have the advantage of easy repairability. If you ding or blemish a table top, a simple hand-sanding in the affected spot and a reapplication of the oil is all you need.

What makes reclaimed American Chestnut special?

American chestnut was once one of the most common trees in the Eastern U.S. but was nearly wiped out by blight in the early 1900s. Every reclaimed board used today comes from centuries-old structures, meaning each table preserves the character of a species that no longer reaches maturity.

As with all of our products, Roseland donates 3% of profits from each table to the American Chestnut Foundation to help restore the species.

What should I expect from the surface texture and finish?

Because the chestnut is reclaimed, each board shows its past: small nail holes, checking, grain variation, and occasional tool marks. These are stabilized and finished smooth enough for dining, but the table intentionally retains a slightly tactile, hand-rubbed surface, consistent with early-American craftsmanship.

How is the table shipped and delivered? What does white glove delivery mean?

Each table is white-glove delivered by our shipping partner, Pilot Logistics. Delivery includes room placement of your choice, as well as debris removal.

Because of its weight, we only offer white-glove delivery. This ensures the table is handled safely and positioned exactly where you’d like it in your home.

How heavy is the table? Are the legs removable for moving?

Depending on the length, the standard-size tables weigh approximately 250 lbs (84") or 300 lbs (96").

Each table is shipped fully assembled. The top and base are constructed as one solid unit and do not feature any removable or disassemblable parts.

For moving, we recommend at least two to three people to safely lift and position the table.

Is the surface resistant to scratches, stains, and heat?

The finish protects the wood but doesn’t form a plastic barrier. Like any natural oiled surface, it can develop character over time.

Use coasters, trivets, and placemats to prevent water rings and heat marks.

Minor scratches or stains can be repaired by lightly sanding and re-oiling the affected area.

Can the finish be refinished or restored?

Yes. The oiled finish is completely renewable. If wear appears over time, simply sand the surface lightly and reapply a coat of your choice of zero VOC oil. No stripping or chemical refinishing required.

How do I care for the table?

- When needed, Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and dry immediately.

- Avoid general all-purpose cleaners — they can strip the wood and the finish.

- For deeper care, apply a thin coat of linseed oil or beeswax polish every few months to restore protection and sheen.

- Do not use silicone-based polishes or sprays.
