Inspired by 18th- and 19th- century ironwork found in the Index of American Design, our goal with The Stissing Fire Tools was to achieve pieces that are both rugged and graceful at the same time.

At 40 inches long, the shovel and poker are designed to lean easily against the wall but feature crescent hooks on each handle if you decide to hang them.

The andirons feature a classic gooseneck  design, hammered spheres, and scroll details at each leg that echo the handles of the poker and shovel.

Made by Black Dog Ironworks in Enfield, Maine

Since 2014, Matthew Foster and team have been making furniture and tools in the woods of central Maine.

  • Hand-Hammered Individuality

Though each of the tools is made to the same specification, hundreds of hammer and forge marks make for unique eccentricities.

  • Black Oxide Bath, then Raw Linseed Oil Rub

Each tool undergoes a black oxide bath, resulting in a beautiful, inert, and corrosion-resistant finish. It is then treated with the same pure, raw linseed oil used on our nightstands and beds, initiating the patina formation process.

  • Maintain and they will last forever

With consistent care, wrought iron tools will last for centuries: keep the tools clean, away from moisture, and rub them with linseed oil every six to twelve months.

Heirloom Promise

We’d like our furniture to be passed on and will send replacement parts and/or repair Roseland products as long as we’re in business.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it wrought iron or wrought steel?

While the term wrought iron is now used to describe any kind of hand-metal work, these fire tools and almost all hand-forging in the USA replaces iron with the superior attributes of steel.

Can it rust?

While the black oxide finish and linseed oil provide some protection, the fire tools with the andiron can still rust if overly exposed to moisture, humidity or the elements. As with most natural metal finishes, regular examination and oiling will reduce oxidization.

How easy are the tools to use?

The combined set of Shovel + Poker weights just under 8 pounds, giving them enough stability and maneuverability to be easy to use during most fireplace tasks.

Do the fire tools require a stand?

We've designed the fire tools to be stand free, and can easily lean against any sturdy surface.

They are compatible with most hooks or fire stands thanks to the curved handle, but please note they are slightly longer than standard tools, so be sure to check your stand's dimensions.

Can I see one at the Stissing House?

Yes! We will have these at the Stissing house from 11/9
