In 1940, Russel Wright worked with Old Hickory on his “Outdoor Living Room” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The following year, Wright designed the American Way Collection for Old Hickory, bringing his modern approach to the company’s traditional bent-hickory and woven-splint construction. Original drawings for the collection, preserved in Wright’s archive, have provided the foundation for its return. Roseland has partnered with Manitoga / The Russel Wright Design Center and Old Hickory to bring a selection of these designs back into production.

From the Met to Old Hickory

In 1940, Russel Wright chose Old Hickory furniture for his “Outdoor Living Room” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Soon after, he designed his own collection for Old Hickory, bringing modern forms to traditional bent-hickory construction. More than eighty years later, his original drawings are bringing these designs back into production.

Made by Hand for Over a Century

Since 1892, Old Hickory Furniture has built by hand, using solid hickory shaped with heat, pressure, and time. The methods remain largely unchanged, chosen for strength, repairability, and long service life.

  • Hand-Bent American Hickory

    Each chair is handmade in Indiana from solid hickory saplings, partially peeled, steam-bent, and shaped by hand. Natural variations in bark, color, and curvature make every piece unique.

  • Pure Tung Oil Finish

    The hickory is finished with pure tung oil and burnt umber, allowing the natural character of the wood to remain visible. The finish will gradually lighten with exposure to UV.

Where is your wood sourced?

Our manufacturing partners source their wood from local lumber mills. As a design specification, we require that the wood is grown in the USA.

Why no stain options?

As a company, we believe in wood's natural grain and ever-changing tonality. While stains can deliver a more consistent tonality, they often come with synthetic additives, VOCs, and chemicals we prefer not to use. Secondly, stains inhibit the natural ease of repairing dings and dents, because they are hard to replicate or match decades from their application.

Is there a difference between "Walnut" and "Black Walnut"?

The short answer is often no. Black Walnut is America's walnut tree - if your furniture is made in the USA from "Walnut" then it is likely American Black Walnut. American Black Walnut has a richer, slightly darker tone than European walnut and was a prized export for furniture makers in Europe.

How do you ship your products?

For most products, we've included free UPS ground shipping to the lower 48. However certain products, due to size, ship with our white glove contractor: Metropolitan Delivery.

How does repair actually work?

We maintain a parts library for all of our products. If we run out of a part, we retain the file CAD and are able to recreate it.
