The Shakers believed that furniture should be honest and not deceitful—no veneers or unnecessary ornamentation. Our nightstand honors this philosophy with the austere design and delicate proportions found in many of their late eighteenth-century side tables. Made from solid American cherry or walnut, the table features a twenty-by-seventeen-inch tabletop with a utilitarian rabbeted drawer. It's hand-rubbed with the same raw linseed oil we use on our bed, resulting in zero VOCs and a finish that becomes richer and darker over time. Please note: the  traditional drawer assembly does not utilize contemporary glides - expect more friction and stiffness when opening the drawer.

Tables are handcrafted in Kenon's ten-person shop in the town of Morgan. Each table is carefully inspected for grain matching and allowed to cure before being packed.

  • A Natural Finish that gets Richer

    The nightstand is finished with raw, 100% pure linseed oil and is zero VOC. Unlike lacquer, linseed oil allows the wood to breathe, enabling tannins to oxidize and the wood to naturally darken over time. This effect is more pronounced in cherry than it is in walnut but occurs in both, resulting in incredibly rich colors.

  • Optional Full Grain Leather Top

    Made by Billy Kirk in Jersey City, NJ, from American hides, the optional leather top is a rich red, protecting the lightly finished wood from water rings and dings. It sits on top of the table like a large coaster, with no adhesive.

  • American Cherry or Black Walnut

    With the exception of the plywood drawer bottom, the nightstand is made from solid wood, in single staves.

  • Zero VOC Finish

    Raw linseed oil is a natural, historic finish made from Flaxseed. It can be re applied easily and allows for easy repair of dings and blemishes.

  • Ships Partially Assembled

    The nightstand ships with the drawer pre-assembled, the legs pre-attached, and a durable fastening system for lifelong ownership.

Things to Know

At Roseland, we are proud that our nightstands are finished by hand, the old fashioned way. We don’t stain, spray, use lacquers or polys, and we don’t do VOCs. Here are some of the ways this might be different to what you’re used to:

Natural color shifts

Cherry wood starts light and darkens significantly in the first three months. From months 3 to 12, the darkening slows, reaching a deep, rich tone with red undertones. Walnut starts as a deep brown and gradually lightens over time. In the first three months walnut’s tone becomes warmer and lighter. From months 3 to 6, the change slows as it settles into a medium brown with golden or amber tones. In our opinion, the mature tones of both woods are preferable to the initial ones.

Linseed oil means a breathable, naturally coarser finish

Many furniture companies seal their wood with an additive layer that closes the grain and can be sanded to a near mirror finish - the lacquer or polyurethane is being sanded rather than the wood itself. With a breathable oil finish, the wood’s grain is exposed, which is naturally coarser than sanded polyurethane or lacquers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the nightstand require some assembly? / Where can I find the nightstand instructions?

We tested shipping the nightstand fully assembled but the damage rate was too high. By shipping partially assembled we can reduce damage and shipping costs at the same time. See the assembly instructions here.

How protective is linseed oil for hot drinks / water damage etc?

Linseed oil is minimally protective but, unlike stained, veneered, and lacquered furniture, it's also very repairable. i.e. hot cups without a coaster will cause heat rings but all you need to do is sand the damage and re-oil it.

Are the finishes for the nightstand and the bed the same?

Yes, all of our nightstands and beds are finished with just hand-rubbed linseed oil, ensuring a consistent finish between both pieces.

Can I use the nightstand as a side table in my living room?

Yes! At 26" it makes a great sofa side table.

Is the leather topper removable?

yes - it has no adhesive, it just sits on top of the table and lets gravity do the work.
